Ideation and Brainstorming

CONCEPT DESIGN...I DO NOT OWN THE ORIGINAL PHOTOS OF RAVYN LENAE

blue island.....concept design

I love TV and music if you couldn’t tell from my bio and the general theme of my projects. For this design, I wanted to combine both interests.

What would a show based on Ravyn Lenae’s Blue Island look like? If the show were to come out, what would the re-released album cover visual be?

This project was a great way for me to indulge my tv-obsessed brain as well as my music-obsessed one. A mix of daydreaming and designing was the objective of this exercise.

Research findings:

What would the show look like?
What would be the tone?
What should audiences take away from the show?
What would a re-release of Ravyn Lenae’s Blue Island look like once the show is on streaming?
What would the color palette be?

Side Comments/Thoughts while Designing

Side Comments
Truly, the hardest part was figuring out the background for the visuals. I knew that I wanted the visuals to look like Ravyn was sitting on a mini island, but the issue came with bending and then deciding what the island would be sitting/floating on. At first, I wanted to put her in the ocean, but I absolutely hated it.

Finally, after hours of messing around in Photoshop, I decided to build a blue room. I remembered reading in an article that some much of the inspiration for this album was based on her hometown in Blue Island,  Illinois. So with that thought in mind, I thought: Why not create a makeshift house for the background?

Thoughts While DesigningHow do I combine my fake show’s premise with the nature based imagery of the real album’s visuals?

How do I combine inside and outside within the visuals?

Should I add orange to this design or would that be too spot on?

Why isn’t this blurring the way that I want it to?

What would a darker verison of the album’s visuals look like?

Would anyone actual look at this design and want to but it?

I love designing tour merch

So much blue, my goodness

Final Design Visuals

intimate, earthly, slightly sad, but mostly hopeful

In this piece, I wanted to play with the idea of an island within a house creating a mix of indoor and outdoor visuals. Thus, the images were meant to summon a version of Ravyn’s home in Blue Island, Illinois where she fell in and out of love, found her love of music and writing, and where she still finds solace years later.

The visuals were created to mimic the airiness, peacefulness, and searching mystery of her album. For me, the album’s songs flow like a coming-of-age story filled with some sadness, joy, and a whole lot of hope.

The colors and masks used in my designs were meant to create a dreamy and intimate atmosphere to match the album’s overall sonic palette.

Ideation and Marketing Campaign The show based on Ravyn Lenae’s album, Blue Island would be called Blue Island Basement

LOGLINE: After being fired from her job, a young woman returns to her coastal hometown where she find herself in an infamous Blue Island basement, where she struggles with redefining her own version of adulthood.

Insight: As many Gen Z stay at home longer than previous generations, they are seeking a sense of purpose, community, and acknowledgement. Not quite like the adults they were taught to admire, but no longer kids.

Big Idea: Display the tone of the show's premise without spoilers. The visuals should capture the tender sadness, but hopefulness of GEN Z

Idea/Articulation: A Blue Island Basement is Temporary

Overall Goal: Get people excited and curious about the upcoming show, The Blue Island Basement, and about Ravyn Lenae’s album

Executions:
  • Character snapshot introductions
  • Environmental and architecture displays shown in a hazy light
  • Pop-up blue basement structures in suburban and coastal towns
  • Blueprint imagery
  • A re-release of Ravyn's album
